How To Fix A Sagging Mattress? Get A New One

When it comes to trying to figure out how to fix a sagging mattress, it might sound a little flippant to say, “just get a new one.” The reality is sleeping on a sagging mattress could cause not just loss of sleep, but other health problems, no matter how you try to fix it.

What Causes Mattress Sagging?

No mattress is built to last forever. Even if you take the absolute best care of your mattress, eventually it will start to sag due to age. A mattress that is well taken care of usually lasts around 10 years. Still, there are several things that can cause a sagging mattress. Because of this, there are several things you can do to help prevent your mattress from sinking.

  • Rotate Your Mattress: You should be rotating your mattress every six months for a new mattress, three months if it’s a few years old
  • Invest in a Mattress Protector: Your body sweats throughout the night. Over the years, that sweat causes the foam in your mattress to break down, causing it to sag. With a good mattress protector, you don’t have to worry about that. Plus, you don’t have to worry about dust mites and things that can void your warranty, like stains.
  • You Have a Defective Mattress: Hey, sometimes it happens, that’s why most mattresses carry a lengthy warranty should something happen, like sagging. It’s important to note, however, if you have any type of stain on your mattress, the warranty will be voided. Did the stain cause the sag? No, but it’s clearly written in every warranty. That’s why it’s so important to get a mattress protector. Not only does it help keep nasty things out of your mattress, but it’s also a good insurance policy in case you do need to file a warranty claim (more on that below).

Do Mattress Toppers Help with Mattress Sagging?

Once you have a sagging mattress, even the best of mattress toppers won’t be able to fix it.

Mattress toppers are made of foam and lie across your mattress to give you a little extra comfort if you have a firmer mattress. With that in mind, if you have a sagging mattress with a mattress topper on it, you’re still going to sink down into the sag. For the most part, mattress toppers are meant for comfort, not necessarily support.

How Do I File a Warranty Claim for a Sagging Mattress?

At Mattress Warehouse, we ONLY sell new mattresses, so all of our mattresses are covered by an extensive warranty. If your new mattress starts to sag, you can file a warranty claim by visiting any of our store locations, or by filing a claim online here.

We cannot stress the importance of a mattress protector enough. A mattress protector has many benefits, including preserving your warranty should the bed become stained. Stained or torn bedding will void your warranty and eligibility for a Comfort Guarantee program exchange.

Don’t Try to Fix a Sagging Mattress – Replace It

There are many sites online that try to convince you it’s really easy to “fix” a sagging mattress on the cheap. For example, one site suggests you stuff pillows under your sagging mattress to even things out. That’s great if you don’t mind sleeping on a now lumpy mattress. After a week, the pain in your back might have you reconsidering.

For your health and safety, the best way to fix a sagging mattress is to replace it – whether by filing a warranty claim or buying a new one. Either way, make sure you have a good mattress protector. It definitely will come in handy for years to come.
