Adjustable Base Guide
An adjustable bed base allows you to sleep in different positions that reduce pressure points, put less strain on your heart, promote proper circulation, and provide personalized support and comfort. An adjustable base can also alleviate back pain and help with snoring, acid reflux, and heartburn.
You can have the power to sleep better in the palm of your hand (with an accompanying remote) by adding an adjustable base. This enhancement to your bed will increase your well-being and help you rest easy. Mattress Warehouse offers a wide selection of adjustable bases with options including head and/or foot adjustment, wireless remotes, and massage features.
What is an Adjustable Mattress Base?
Simply put, an adjustable mattress base is a motorized foundation that rests under your mattress and gives you the ability to raise and/or lower your head, legs, or both. Adjustable beds are controlled by a remote – some are wired, some are wireless. The adjustable bases themselves are usually called a number of different things – an adjustable base, an adjustable mattress base, an adjustable bed, an electric base, etc. Regardless, these names all mean the same thing.
What are the Benefits of an Adjustable Base?
✔ Back Support
The best way for your mattress to contour to your body is to use an adjustable base. This gives you hyper-focused pressure relief. This is especially true for anyone who suffers from back – and lower back – pain. You can adjust your setting to maintain optimum comfort and relief from nagging back pain.
✔ Combats Swelling and Inflammation
An adjustable base is actually very beneficial for those who have health issues, such as diabetes and sleep apnea. The reduction of swelling and inflammation is great for those who are pregnant – the benefit being you can elevate your feet to reduce any swelling.
✔ Promotes Circulation
Sleeping in an elevated position helps to increase your blood flow so you don’t wake up with numb limbs.
✔ Relaxation
Who doesn’t enjoy a nice massage? Several of our adjustable bases come with a massage or vibration feature that will help you relax while relieving minor aches and pains.
✔ Lessens Digestive Stress
Suffer from heartburn? Acid reflux? With an adjustable base, you don’t have to worry about trying to sleep through it anymore. With your head and chest elevated, indigestion issues decline, helping you stay asleep throughout the night.
✔ Breathe Easier
With an adjustable bed, sleeping with your upper body elevated can help those who suffer from sleep apnea and snoring by keeping your airways open.
FAQs About Adjustable Bases
Is an adjustable base worth it?
Absolutely, and we’re not just saying that. An adjustable base has so many health benefits, from helping with sleep apnea (see below) to helping with swelling and inflammation in your ankles and knees. Plus, it’s a nice bonus being able to raise your head without having to add a bunch of pillows underneath.
Does an adjustable base help with pressure points?
Certain bases definitely help relieve pressure points, such as the Tempur-Ergo Extend, which has a zero-gravity feature that lifts your head and feet to give you the feel of weightlessness.
Do adjustable beds help with sleep apnea?
Believe it or not, adjustable beds do help with sleep apnea. In a recent study published under the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, even a slight elevation at the head of your bed (around 7 degrees) “significantly improves obstructive sleep apnea severity” without interfering with how you sleep.
What are the best mattresses for adjustable beds?
Most all of the mattresses we sell here at Mattress Warehouse are adjustable base friendly, meaning you can use them on just about any adjustable base without issue. To find out if the mattress you have your eye on will work with an adjustable bed, you can always ask any of our store team members or talk with one of our online chat agents.
Can you put any mattress on an adjustable bed?
Most newer mattresses will work with an adjustable base, but some older mattresses – especially ones that are particularly heavy – won’t work with an adjustable base. Remember, the adjustable bed uses motors to lift the mattress and, if it’s too heavy, it won’t work. The best way to find if your mattress will work with an adjustable bed is to ask any of our store team members or talk with one of our online chat agents.
Is an adjustable bed good for your back?
An adjustable bed is great for your back. Being able to adjust how far up or down you want your mattress to be when you sleep takes pressure off your back. Anytime pressure points are removed, the better it is for your entire body, especially your back.
Are Adjustable Bases Good for Side Sleepers?
Honestly, this question is all about comfort and support for side sleepers. Some side sleepers might enjoy a slight elevation to their head and feet, but others might not. It truly depends on the individual. It’s always a good idea to try an adjustable base out before purchasing it. You can see how an adjustable bed feels at any of our stores.
What is a split adjustable base?
A split adjustable base is usually in reference to a split adjustable base king mattress. Instead of having one adjustable base that controls your entire mattress, you have two adjustable beds – one for you and one for your significant other. This also requires two mattresses instead of one. For example, two Twin XL mattresses are the same size as a King, so for a split adjustable base, you could have two Twin XL mattresses instead of the King.
How Much is an Adjustable Base?
Adjustable bases vary in price depending on the size and model. For a better idea of price, it’s best to talk with a member of our store sales team or a member of our online chat team.
Do You Need a Box Spring with an Adjustable Base?
No. In fact, an adjustable base won’t work with a box spring. In order for the head and feet to lift, the mattress needs to be able to move with the base. Box springs are made not to be flexible. So, in this case, you actually save money by not having to buy box springs.
