How long does it take to break in a mattress?
It usually takes about 30 days to truly break in a mattress. When you get your new mattress, you might be surprised that it doesn’t feel the same way it did in the store. That’s because many people have tried out the mattress in the store, which breaks it in, while you’re the first person to sleep on your new mattress. After 30 days, your mattress will feel like it did in the store and stay that way until it’s time to get a new one.
Do I have to flip or rotate my mattress?
Most newer mattresses don't need to be flipped, but it is recommended that you rotate your mattress 180 degrees every six months. You can read more about flipping and rotating your Mattress here.
What is the difference between a standard profile and a low profile box spring?
A standard box spring is about 9 inches tall, whereas a low profile box spring is 5 inches tall. Choosing which type to get depends on how comfortable you are sleeping higher off the ground. When you add a mattress to a standard box spring, you could end up being several feet off the ground. If you'd rather sleep a little closer to the floor, it's probably best to go with the low profile box spring.
How often should you replace your mattress?
The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7-10 years. Of course, there are a lot of things that factor in the decision to replace your mattress. Have you been rotating your mattress like you should (every six months)? Are you still getting good sleep throughout the night without your mattress waking you up? Does your mattress still provide the right level of support? Do you have a mattress protector covering it to keep dust mites and other nasty things from accumulating inside? Do you wake up with back or other pains every morning? These are just a few of the questions to ask yourself. As long as you take care of your mattress – and it’s not causing you any issues – it can last for a while.
How do you dispose of a mattress?
We partner with recycling companies such as Resource Recycling and Recycling Works to deconstruct old mattresses and recycle their materials. These materials, like metal from box springs and innerspring coils, and cotton from mattress padding, are stripped and sterilized, provided to up-cycling companies, and used to make goods such as dog beds and carpet pads. You can read more about Mattress Warehouse's Green & Clean Initiative here.
What is a mattress in a box?
A mattress is in a box is just that, one that comes sealed inside of a box. The mattress is usually made of memory foam or a hybrid of memory foam and innersprings and is vacuum-sealed in a bag. Once you open the box and remove the mattress from the plastic covering, it will unwind and return to its normal mattress shape.
What is an adjustable base?
An adjustable base is a type of bed frame that gives you the power to raise your head, your feet and legs, or both. Certain adjustable bases come with: USB power slots so you can charge your phone; a wireless remote; massage features; and even the ability to help improve your snoring. It just depends on which adjustable base you select. You can learn more about adjustable bases here.
What is a hybrid mattress?
A hybrid mattress is the combination of a memory foam mattress and an innerspring mattress. While it is soft, the coils inside the mattress provide additional support, giving you that “just right” feel throughout the night. They can sometimes be a little more durable than memory foam mattresses while adding additional support throughout the night.
What is a plush mattress?
A plush mattress mattress is flexible and easily conforms to the body. When you lie on it, you should sink in, but not so much that you struggle to get up and out of bed. These mattresses are great for light sleepers — especially those who sleep with a partner. This is because a plush mattress absorbs motion, so if your partner is tossing and turning during the night, you are less likely to wake up.
What is a split mattress?
A split mattress is one that is best suited for couples. A split king mattress is ideal for those couples who have different sleeping needs, e.g., one needs a firm mattress while the other prefers a softer feel. It's also great for couples who want to add an adjustable base (which also comes in split configurations). This way, you can lift up your head without disturbing your partner.
Can you put a mattress on the floor?
You can, but there’s a very good chance it will void the warranty on your mattress. Your mattress needs some type of base, whether it’s bed rails with box springs, a platform bed with slats for support, or an adjustable base. Your mattress needs support so it can support you.
Is a mattress tax deductible?
According to Intuit (the makers of TurboTax) you can deduct a mattress on your taxes. However, it has to be a medical expense, which means it would need to be a “hospital” type mattress. Plus, you might have to verify it is a medical expense later on if you do claim it as a deduction.
Can you wash a mattress pad?
It’s important to follow the care instructions that came with your mattress pad. That being said, most vinyl-backed mattress pads can be washed on the gentle cycle using mild detergent. If it’s recommended to machine dry, do so only on low heat.

Box Spring

What is the difference between a box spring and foundation?
Box springs are used if you are using bed rails. If you have a foundation, such as a platform bed, it comes with slats that lay across the width of your bed so you don’t need box springs. You also do not need a box spring if you have an adjustable base.
Do I need a box spring?
Not necessarily. If you already have a foundation, such as a platform bed, it comes withslats that lay across the width of your bed so you don’t need a box spring. With most mattresses, you can choose between a box spring or an adjustable base, based on your preference.
What is the purpose of a box spring?
The main purpose of a box spring is to provide support to your mattress and help prevent sagging. Box springs can also protect your mattress by absorbing any impact that may occur, like tossing and turning. They can also help your mattress feel cooler by improving airflow to the mattress.
How long do box springs last?
A box spring lasts 8-10 years on average, and they should ideally be replaced any time you purchase a new mattress. If you need to prolong the lifespan of your box spring, a bunkie board can be used to provide additional support.
Does a box spring make a difference?
Absolutely! Box springs have two very important functions. The first is that box springs provide a strong foundation for your mattress, offering support and prolonging its lifespan. The second is that box springs absorb motion, which reduces shock and wear and tear to your mattress.
Can you put a box spring on the floor?
Technically speaking, yes. If you are in a situation where you have to put a mattress on the floor, putting a box spring underneath will preserve the mattress and increase airflow to the mattress, making it feel cooler. However, it’s always a good idea to use a bed frame because they provide extra protection to both your box spring and your mattress.
How to fix a broken box spring:
Once a box spring breaks, it is no longer properly absorbing shock or providing proper support. Only temporary fixes can be made, such as placing a bunkie board on top of the box spring. The best option is to replace your box spring.
How to cover a box spring:
There are a few different ways to cover up a box spring. The most popular option being a bedskirt. These days, bed skirts come in many designs and can help tie together the decor of a bedroom. If you’re looking for a no-cost approach, take an extra flexible fitted sheet and use that to cover your box spring!
How to keep box spring from slipping off frame:
If your box spring is sliding off the frame, that could be due to gaps between the frame and box spring. Velcro strips or rug pad grippers can be an easy and cost efficient way to keep your box spring from sliding off your frame.
How to keep mattress from sliding off box spring:
Sometimes the reason your mattress is sliding can be as simple as dust accumulation. Start with vacuuming between your mattress and box spring. If this doesn’t solve the problem, a non-slip rubber rug pad can be an inexpensive investment that will keep your mattress in place.

Bed Frame

Do you need a bed frame?
While a bed frame is not absolutely necessary, they are highly recommended because bed frames can provide you with benefits that will help you get a better night’s sleep. Bed frames provide additional support, allow for proper airflow to your mattress, help keep your mattress clean, and extend the lifespan of your mattress by preventing damage.
Do I need a box spring with a bed frame?
It depends on what kind of mattress you have. Many modern mattresses have a layer of foam and/or coils that act as the mattress’s support system. Traditional inner-spring mattresses are ideal for box springs because a box spring will absorb motion, which reduces shock and wear and tear to the mattress.
Can you put any mattress on an adjustable bed frame?
No, you cannot put any mattress on an adjustable bed, also known as an adjustable base. While most modern mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases, certain mattresses, like inner-spring mattresses, are not compatible due to the need for the mattress to bend with the adjustable base.
How much weight can a bed frame hold?
In most cases, a standard bed frame can hold approximately 500 pounds, while heavy-duty steel bed frames can hold 1,000-5,000 pounds. Loft style beds that are high off the ground can handle less weight, averaging 200 pounds, and children’s bed frames average a weight capacity of about 150 pounds.
How to fix a squeaky bed frame
You can fix a squeaky bed frame in a variety of ways. The first course of action should always be to check the joints of the bed frame where the parts meet. The joints may have loose bolts that need to be tightened, which is not only the most common reason for a squeaky frame, but also very dangerous. If everything appears to be tight and sturdy, you can try applying a silicone lubricant, such as WD40, to the joints where the parts of the frame connect. Finally, you can try rotating your mattress in an attempt to better distribute the weight across the frame. If none of these techniques work, it may be time for a new bed frame.
How to reinforce a bed frame
If you need your bed frame to be sturdier, more supportive, or less noisy, you can try reinforcing it before buying a new frame. The best way to do this is to add slats to your bed frame. Pick up some plywood and measure the inner width of the bed frame to figure out the length you’ll need for the slats, and then make them about 1 ¼ inch wide. If you aren’t the handiest, you can always go to your local hardware store for assistance.

Bunk Bed

Are bunk beds safe?
Yes, bunk beds are safe as long as they are used correctly. Bunk beds are suitable for children and adults, but they’re most commonly used in kid's rooms and dorms. One way to ensure your bunk beds are safe is to follow any weight limitations or restrictions. Plus, as long as the ladder is used properly and the bunk bed is not placed in an overly crowded area, they are safe to use.
How to make bunk beds safer
Bunk beds can be made safer by implementing simple safety measures to prevent falls. This includes adding guardrails on the top bunk (about 5 inches taller than the mattress top), installing a nightlight near the ladder to make it easier to see at night, and only having one person occupy a bunk at a time.
How tall are bunk beds?
On average, bunk beds are 5 ½ - 6 feet tall, and they are most commonly designed for twin-sized mattresses.
How much weight can a bunk bed hold?
This varies on the type of bunk bed. Children’s bunk beds typically hold 150-220 lbs per bed, while adult bunk beds typically hold anywhere from 250-800 lbs. Metal bunk bed frames are sturdier and can support more weight than wooden frames.
Do bunk beds need box springs?
No, in fact, the added height of a box spring can make a bunk bed more dangerous, because it can create a fall hazard. If you need extra support for your bunk bed, a bunkie board is recommended. A bunkie board is a piece of wood, usually 2-3 inches thick, that goes between your foundation (in this case, the frame) and mattress to provide additional support where needed.
How to reinforce bunk beds
If you need to add extra support to your bunk bed, start by adding guardrails and a bunkie board. It is also a good idea to place a bunk bed against a wall for additional support and safety precautions. If you have a wooden frame for your bunk bed, check the humidity levels in the room. Excess humidity can cause wood to expand, so it’s a good idea to take measures to protect against humidity that could damage your bed frame.

2in Bunkie Board

Can you put a bunkie board on top of slats?
Yes, you can put a bunkie board on top of slats. In fact, if you feel your slatted foundation isn’t supportive enough, a bunkie board can provide additional support.
Do I need a bunkie board?
Bunkie boards provide support while maintaining a low profile, and they’re compatible with a variety of mattresses. It is always recommended to get a bunkie board with your mattress so you have the best possible support every night.
What is a bunkie board made of?
Bunkie boards are made of plywood, solid wood, or particle board, varying from 1-3 inches.
Can a bunkie board replace a box spring?
Yes, a bunkie board can replace a box spring if you would like a low profile and/or need additional support on a slatted foundation. Bunkie boards can also be used in addition to a box spring for added support.

Customer Service

What if I don’t like my new mattress? What is your cancellation and return policy?
If you are not satisfied with your original mattress after 30 days of use, contact Mattress Warehouse to begin the process for your one-time comfort exchange. You can test out your mattress for up to one year before deciding whether you want to keep your original selection or utilize the comfort exchange program. If you use the Comfort Guarantee program, you will receive a 100 percent credit of the original purchase price to be applied toward the current ticketed price of the replacement mattress. You will be responsible for any difference above and beyond the amount of your credit once you make your mattress exchange. Certain fees apply.
What should I expect from my new mattress?
The first thing you might notice is that your new mattress doesn't quite feel like the one you tried out in the store. That's because the ones in the store have been "broken in" by others who have tried out the mattress. Since your mattress is 100 percent new, it hasn't been broken in yet. We ask our customers to give it at least 30 days before you decide you want to switch to a different mattress. That gives you time to "break in" your new mattress. If you've purchased a mattress-in-a-box, it might smell a little funny once you remove it from the plastic. That smell should dissipate after 24 hours.
What are the details of your One-Year Price Guarantee?
It's simple — if you find a better price at any of our local competitors, we’ll match it, plus 50 percent of the difference. This is our promise to you and it is valid for a full year after purchase.
